Carcassone

The mostly reconstructed medieval city of Carcassone was high on my must do list. It was a long way back towards Spain where we had come from but with first class rail passes we were keen to try it. The first views as we approached on foot from the railway station were fairytale picturesque. And as we got closer it got even better.

Anna stands in the 'lices' to photograph the city walls. This is the space between the inner and outer city walls.

Chateau Comtal, with fairytale turrets.

Inside the Chateau Comtal, a fortified palace in the middle of the fortified city. Some suggest that the lords of the castle may need to defend themselves against the townspeople.

Slate roof, photographed from the battlements.

Streets in the medieval town are maybe a little quieter and cleaner than they were 500 years ago.
For those who really like reading and are interested in the medieval town of Carcassone, "Labyrinth" by Kate Mosse is a fascinating story based in this area.

  1. Ah! How nice to see Carcassonne in the Sunshine! Our experience was a little different!

And you've just reminded me - I must give you back your copy of Labyrinth!

  2. So that's where it is... I now have 2 copies. Did you know she has written a couple of other books as well?
