Venice

Its a long train ride from Livorno to Venice, via Florence ( hey weren't we here yesterday?) (just time to grab a canolli from the McCafe across the road) and Bologna, but here we are.

Having left in a rush this morning I found I had forgotten my sunglasses... a new pair in Florence... my third for the trip as I left one pair in the palace in Ronda.

Only 160 -200 Euros for a ride in a gondola!
We settled for a much cheaper boat ride, 6 Euros and we arrived in St Mark's square by water.

St Mark's Square.

One of the gorgeous mosaics on the floor of the cathedral, Basilica San Marco.

Anna had to cover her knees with a pink tablecloth as she was wearing shorts, the only time we have encountered a dress code on this trip. With the weather so incredibly hot most places have been more understanding.

We saw the Pala d'oro Golden altarpiece, so detailed and ornate it would take a week to appreciate each icon; these impressive bronze horses, originally from Constantinople/Istanbul over 800 years ago; fabulous views from the bell tower and balcony; a room full of splendid tapestries, each with a story worthy of its own book; and ceilings all covered in gold and ceramic mosaics that would have been the highlight of any other cathedral, but only rate the fifth place on my list!!!

And then I ran out of battery... again! If possible always have a spare battery and a spare chip even if you are sure you will never need it. Luckily Anna and Riccardo both have their cameras, but I don't have their photos yet.

Our first class Eurail trip back to Livorno was faster and more direct and came with champagne...
Back in Livorno the day was not yet over...
Tonight Spain play the Netherlands in the World Cup Final. We dash across to the nearest pub to watch the last of the game. This is a very small family owned place. They make room for us and we order a drink. There is no question that we will be supporting Espana, having just spent 2 weeks there and followed every game they played. The locals are also pleased to see Spain win. Newspapers here had been commenting on the superiority of the catholic teams!!
