Florence

Ponte Vecchio from the bus tour of Florence.
The umbrella is for the sun, not the rain!

Interior of Brunelleschi's famous dome, the Duomo Florence.
Photos don't do it justice as it is so big and so high above you .
Stained glass windows byDonatello ... isn't that one of the "teenage mutant ninja turtles"?
Duomo, Florence.
The floor... marble from Ethiopia, Egypt, Tunisia, Italy and Greece. As well as showing the power and might of the Roman Empire, an Empire able to requisition marble from all corners of the world (well the mediterranean anyway!) and to command the services of such skilled workmen.
This 3D circle image has a completely flat smooth 2D surface. Imagine cutting the curves of STONE, and fitting them so precisely to make this design.

Maybe I've been reading too much Dan Brown, but I'm sure this is some sort of secret symbol.
Again made completely of marble, cut and fitted and smooth as silk.

The skill and intricacy of the sculptures on the streets are as beautiful as those tucked away in museums.
Sadly there are no photos of the queues we endured- outside in the 40 degree heat- to see Michaelangelo's famous statue of David.
No photos inside the museum of course. There is a copy of David in the Piazza Della Signoria, but as this is "family" blog there will be no nudes!!!
The Duomo... I am sure it was in scaffolding last time I was here too.
The streets appear deserted but the heat has driven people into the shade. I love the way this street curves around the Duomo.
Intricate workmanship and beauty every where you look.
A Michaelangelo view from the Ponte Vecchio. These are the only clouds we had on the whole trip, and they are just hanging around to catch the sunset and soften into pink and peach just like a Michaelangelo painting.

Anna shopping on the Ponte Vecchio.
The famous Ponte Vechio ( old bridge... 600 year old). The shops on the bridge are mostly jewellers... the rich families who used the bridge got rid of the smelly old butcher shops and replaced them with something nicer.
One panel off a gorgeous 8 panel door.
Two tired (but Intrepid) travellers on the train back to Livorno.
